Marriage

The marriage covenant, by which a man and a woman form with each other an intimate communion of life and love, has been founded and endowed with its own special laws by the Creator. By its very nature it is ordered to the good of the couple, as well as to the generation and education of children. Christ the Lord raised marriage between the baptized to the dignity of a sacrament (CCC 1660)

The Sacrament of Matrimony is a promise made by a man and a woman before God and the Church, which is accepted and confirmed by God and consummated by the bodily union of the couple. Because God himself forms the bond of sacramental marriage, it is binding until the death of one of the partners (CCC, 1625-1631).

In order to marry in the Catholic church, both candidates must be free to marry. This means neither candidate has been validly married before in the past. Widows, widowers and those who have obtained an annulment of their previous marriage are free to marry. If you are divorced, but your marriage has not yet been annulled, your parish priest will be able to help you.  Please make an appointment.

For more information about annulments visit

Both candidates preparing to be married in the Catholic church must be at least 18 years of age, and at least one of them Catholic.

It is recommended that you contact the parish office at least 6 months prior to the wedding date.  This first meeting with the priest will give you information on the documentation required and how to register for the marriage preparation courses.
