Marriage
It is so wonderful that you are looking to get married in the Catholic Church. Each
marriage is unique and has unique aspects to address. We ask that you read this
instruction, fill out the form, and we will be in touch within the next week.
Because of the time it can take for the preparation for marriage as well as how
quickly parish calendars book up, it is strongly recommended that you get in
touch with the parish office at least 6 months before the wedding. If you contact
us after that point, we may not be able to help you in the short time given.
What Is The Process?
There is a bit of a process to help prepare you for marriage, a paperwork portion as well
as a marriage preparation portion.
Marriage preparation can be begun at anytime. In the Diocese of Victoria, this done
online at the moment. You will receive various modules to complete together, along with
a book and a liturgy planning book in preparation for your wedding. It can be done at
your own pace, but in most cases is required to be completed prior to the wedding. For
more information, please visit: https://www.rcdvictoria.org/marriage-prep.
For the paperwork portion, you are required to get a few documents in preparation:
1) Before even looking to paperwork, we should make sure that we are a regularly
practicing Catholic. Getting married in the Church means we are promising
before God and the world that we want to uphold the Catholic vision of marriage,
which includes a regular practicing faith. This is part of the promises we make on
the day of marriage.
2) For any baptized party (whether Catholic or other denominations) we require a
copy of your baptism certificate. This must be, for the Catholic(s), a recent copy.
Please call the parish in which you were baptized and ask them for a recent
copy. Once you’ve received it, please ensure a copy of it is received by the
office.
3) Civil Marriage License. These can be purchased up to 3 months prior to the
wedding. Please make sure to drop it off at the office no later than 6 weeks prior
to your wedding.
4) Any other needed paperwork due to unique circumstances will be shared on a
case by case basis.
Once the necessary baptism certificate(s) are received, the office will contact you to
book a date for a meeting for the marriage interview. If you are getting married at St
Peter’s, there will be a separate meeting to discuss the liturgy that will be celebrated
that day.
